The Walking Dead series by Robert Kirkman
Having recently been turned on to The Walking Dead television series on AMC, I became interested in reading the comic book series. Originally in comic book format, the series has also been released in hardbound collections, as far as comic # 96 (Book 8).
This is a series which I highly recommend, especially if you are a fan of the television show (also recommended). While many of the main story events coincide between comic and television (so far that I have noticed), the details through which they get accomplished differ to varying degrees. Thus, for those who have been introduced to one or the other, the differences are sufficient enough to make the tale fresh and keeps the reader or viewer on their toes.
The story follows Rick Grimes, a small town sheriff who awakes from a coma into a world overrun by the living dead. Along with a small and ever changing group of survivors, Rick struggles to survive and keep safe that which he hold dearest- his family. Differing from other survival horror stories, this takes place over a longer period of time making it seem more realistic than typical post-apocalyptic stories which have the characters reaching happy ending very quickly. Filled with dynamic characters, thoughtful dialogue and plot twists; this is truly a gripping and visually beautiful tale.
